Sirius XM: Taking the Satellite Out of Satellite Radio

Sirius XM is like a very complex puzzle, in which the pieces of the puzzle are constantly being produced one at a time. When Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio merged to form Sirius XM Radio, a few of us noted the elimination of “Satellite” from the new company name, and wondered what it could be mean. Fast forward to today, and there is much going on behind the scenes at Sirius XM to indicate the company is and has been positioning itself to be the leader in media content distribution, by way of new and perhaps, not yet developed technologies.

The latest puzzle piece comes from Teleca, which today announced that it has completed the development of a new Android based platform for Sirius XM Radio. This is fueling speculation that Satellite Radio’s days could be numbered, as Sirius XM switches to an online brand. While it has been no secret that Satellite Radio pundits point to Internet Radio as Sirius XM’s eventual Grim Reaper, few have considered that Sirius XM itself is far ahead of the issue.

Consider that in early 2010, Sirius XM’s CEO Mel Karmazin while announcing SATRAD 2.0, explained that it takes three years for new technology to go from concept to reality with the OEM’s, which suggests that the company had already been working towards its own future which without doubt, included a plan to address internet radio competition.

The future is so cool and Sirius is right in the middle. This is great and as these things come to be real, revenue will increase.

As Brandon said. “Oh! The possibilities…..”

    Thanks

ok, ok, ok….this is what I am talking about. we are on the cusp of a new age in Radio beyond what any of us could imagine.

I have one more thing to the possibilities. Imagine hearing a song, pressing a button on your radio or stating a command such as “Upcoming Concerts” and having a list of concerts revealed within a 50 mile radius(Nav).

Live Nation, Siri(XM) and the Golden Age of SATRAD 2.0. How about them apples kids!

What a future!!!! Just speak what you want and it will come on. WOW! That could save an accident from happening taking your eye off the road while changing the channel. Thanks Brandon for the tremendous update!

Based on Morgan Stanley’s recent research report, they project Sirius to have 27+ million subscribers at the end of 2015 – FWIW.
